So, picture this. I’m chilling at home, minding my business, doing my skincare routine and enjoying a glass of wine, when out of the blue, I get hit with this unexpected invitation to judge the Hooters Regional Bikini Pageant. And you know what my first thought is? Yep, you nailed it. “What the hell do I wear to something like that?”. Cue the panic mode as I raid my closet like a madwoman.
My 15-year-old daughter waltzes in, taking in the chaos, and she’s like, “Uh, Mom, what’s with all the drama?”. So, I spill the beans, explaining the whole bikini pageant gig. And you know what she hits me with? She looks me square in the eyes and says, “Mom, no offense, but ain’t nobody gonna be checking you out when there’s a room full of girls in bikinis.”
Well, there goes my fashion crisis in a nutshell!
Back to the invitation: as someone all about inclusivity and empowerment, I was a bit torn at first. But then, after careful consideration, I figured this would be a great opportunity to try something different. To dig deeper into what this event is all about. Let me tell you, it turned out to be quite the eye-opening experience!
Here’s how the evening played out. Upon entering the venue, I was warmly welcomed by a friendly manager who immediately made me feel at ease. With a genuine smile, she introduced herself and graciously guided me on a tour of the restaurant. She then escorted me to the judge’s table. It was exhilarating, realizing the pivotal role I was about to undertake in the upcoming Hooters Bikini Pageant. As anticipation mounted, I knew the stage was set for an unforgettable event. 15 regional contestants would vie for a chance to compete in the prestigious Miss Hooters International Pageant crown in Las Vegas.
The winner of Miss Hooters International 2023 will actively participate in Hooters’ marketing and promotional initiatives throughout the upcoming year. This includes appearances on various traditional and social media channels. As well as at Hooters’ special events and both domestic and international restaurant openings. The selection process for the 50 contestants vying for the title involved choosing from a pool of over 18,000 Hooters Girls employed across more than 400 Hooters restaurants worldwide. But hey, first things first – you’ve got to conquer regionals.
I was one of four female judges for the event.
We were assigned our very own Hooters girl and let me tell you, she was absolutely fantastic! From ensuring our glasses were always filled to anticipating our every need, she went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable and well cared for. Thanks, “K”! 🧡
Once settled at the judge’s table, we received an orientation on how the evening would unfold. It was clear that we had an important task ahead of us – judging contestants not only on their bikini bodies but also on their poise and stage presence as well as sports costumes. The anticipation in the room was palpable as we prepared for what promised to be an unforgettable night of excitement and entertainment.
The pageant started with the contestants donning their formal wear, providing a real glimpse into their personalities through their choice of dress. I had the opportunity to meet each contestant, engaging in individual chats. I was thoroughly impressed by their confidence and ambitious career goals. Many are juggling school commitments and family life, preparing for bodybuilding competitions, and just beginning to chart their post-Hooters plans.
While some ladies displayed nerves, others seemed eager to complete the task.
Can you blame them? I can only imagine the mix of excitement and apprehension that comes with this experience. While wearing a swimsuit at the beach is one thing, being under scrutiny in a contest is a whole other level. Nevertheless, despite their jitters, every girl rose to the occasion. They understood the assignment! Witnessing their performances, I couldn’t help but feel like a proud auntie.
In the initial round, the theme was sports-inspired. Each contestant showcased their favorite sporty costume, ranging from boxers to volleyball players, NASCAR drivers to golfers, and cheerleaders to gymnasts. We evaluated them based on originality, physique, and stage presence. The incredible amount of support and cheers they received from the crowd was truly astounding.
During a brief intermission, the ladies changed into their swimsuits, allowing me extra time to mingle with the area managers, patrons, and fellow judges. I particularly enjoyed the camaraderie permeating the room, making it feel like one big family.
The bikini round was electrifying!
With the stage ablaze in a dazzling array of competition bikinis alongside store-bought favorites. Each contestant brought their unique flair to the runway, exuding confidence as they flaunted their curves and showcased their personalities. It was a spectacle of beauty, grace, and fierce determination as the ladies gave it their all. It left the audience captivated and cheering for more.
